Summary
of Site:
The web site displays a calendar of
future anti-racism events and protests from around the world, however most of
these events will be occurring in the United States. We could not find any Canadian events listed on this current
posting. The site has articles on
events that have happened in past world anti-racism events and protests,
although, again the coverage was focused mainly on the United States.
The site has many useful and up to date links to other well maintained
ante-racism sites, as well as to links to conferences being held on anti-racist
issues.
All of the articles and postings on
this site are well referenced and it is obvious that the site is revised often.
All of the information we viewed when we reviewed the site was on recent
events.
The site has a link to its archives,
so you can find information that would be pertinent to an anti-racism issue you
were studying with your students, and has links to Woman’s Net, Peace Net, and
Eco Net, all of which could be useful in the classroom when studying issues of
gender, the environment, or the world. You can also sign-up for “AntiRacismNet News” which keeps
you up to date on information posted on their web site. One note of interest is that at the bottom of the page, there
are links on resources to help people deal with the events of September 11th.
The appearance of the site was bright and inviting, and it was easy to
navigate from link to link. The
only thing we felt was missing on the site was a search engine, which would help
us find further information on anti-racism.
The
Rating:
Although there are no specific ideas for teaching children about
anti-racism or lesson plans, we liked the site.
We felt that this would be a good start to a class discussion, as
students could view various actions towards the creation of an anti-racist
state, and then form their own opinions about how they took place and what the
people were fighting for. We give
this site a “WORTH SURFING”, but would recommend following it up with a look
at a Canadian site, to get local perspective as well.
