Story Structure

Objective:

How to have students look at the structure of the story

Summary:

1. Plotting the structure on a graph.  Compare other  students' graphical interpretations of the story

2. The students could write about different aspects of the story structure using word processing software.

3. The students could use visuals to illustrate different structures of the story.

4. Reader Response- Groupwork - One station has the teacher helping a group work on the computers. They could be using word processing to organize their analysis. They could be using art software to illustrate their understanding of the story. They could write letters to the characters using the format laid out in the word processing software. Different groups of students could write letters to different characters. They could also write letters to the author or the reader whose is about to be introduced to the story.

5. Students could each present parts of a story. They could do this as individuals or groups. They could use word processing software to compose a summary to use in a presentation to the class.

6. Take the main ideas of the story and create a different story around it using the play/puppet show format, or another format. This idea is neat because you could have a story created in a software program and ask students to keep certain ideas and edit the other parts of story. Sort of a cut and create version to share with the group.

Comments:

Each one of the ideas above needs to be developed into a microteaching lesson. The P.L.O.'s need to be examined so that the original concept of Story-time is still one of the focal points. After you've created a microteaching lesson, go back and check to see if any other points in this title or the other titles have been included. There might be cross-over. Note this connection to other areas. Thanks.
