Rene “Big Bottom” Otero
I played a bit of piano as a child, a bit of clarinet and oboe in school bands and sang in the chorus, but I didn't pick up a stringed instrument until my senior year. I learned a bit of guitar, but quickly fell in love with the bass and began playing in bands. Bands I’ve been in, A King's X/Rush/Soundgarden/The Police thing called Colour Scheme (Oooh! You gotta love those college band names). These boys are now called Hank Madison and they kick much ass. Check 'em out. Gathering of Thieves (Tallahassee/Gainesville) - Buddy Holly meets Phish meets the Smiths. Weird, fun band. Turbo Lounge (Tallahassee) Acid jazz, jam band. Uptown Rudy (Tallahassee)- New Orleans funk meets Southern rock. My boys are still rockin' the South as Tishamingo. Then I was lucky enough to be the first bass player in this badass rock band. I'm back with some more Big Bottom, baby.
My bass gurus:James Jamerson, Chuck Rainey, George Porter Jr., Paul McCartney, John Paul Jones, John Entwistle, Andy Rourke, Bruce Thomas, John Taylor, Allen Woody, Sting, Jack Bruce, Flea, P-Nut, James Eller, Verdine White, Tommy Shannon, Kenny Gradney and Rocco Prestia.
I was playing a gig in LA with an acoustic guitar/bass/drum trio. I had just bought a new tuner pedal, but I neglected to learn how this pedal uses a tiny little dot to tell you if you are in E or E flat for example. That night we opened with this cool song that started with just the guitar. The drummer played this sweet fill and I slid my way up to an A only it wasn't and A!!!! I can't begin to describe the look on the singer's face. Hee hee.
