Information from:  Rural Center for Aids/STD Prevention:

"In a 1997 review commissioned by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV\AIDS(UNAIDS),
evidence indicates that sexual health education for children and young people promotes safer sexual activity. "

"Worldwide, the majority of young people have begun to have sexual intercourse before they leave their teens, and at least half by the age of 16.  Sixty-eight reports on HIV\AIDS and sexual health education from several countries were reviewed. Of the reports, 53 were evaluations of educational interventions. Twenty-two studies reported that HIV and \ or sexual health education either delayed the onset of sexual activity, reduced the number of sexual partners, or reduced unplanned pregnancy and STD rates. Twenty-seven studies reported neither increase nor decrease of sexual activity and attendant rates of STDs and pregnancy.
