| The Dix Hills Fire Department Rescue Squad answers approximately 1100 calls a year. The Squad utilizes four Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances and a rehab vehicle/back-up ambulance as well as a First Responder Vehicle referred to as 2-8-Able. The squad has about 75 members, of which some are rescue only while some perform additional firematic duties. Each member must, as a minimum, maintain an Emergency Medical Technician-Defibrillation (EMT-D) certification. EMT-D's are trained to use an Automatic External Defibrillation (AED) device to shock the heart into a regular rhythm. Additional training will allowe a member to certify as an Emergency Critical Care Technician (EMT-CC). An EMT-CC is permitted to administer medications and defibrillate patients on "standing orders". Both EMT's are able to communicate with a Suffolk County physician in Medical Control at anytime. The Rescue Squad is integrated into the Fire Department, rather than being its own company, although it has its own meetings, trainings, and officers. There is at least one ambulance at each of the three firehouses, all checked weekly so they are always readily available to respond. To assist in the response to calls during the day, members of the district respond in two vehicles -- 2-8-10 (a small fire truck) and 2-8-Medic. Both vehicles are equipped with ALS equipment to provide first response. After hours and on weekends and on holidays, 2-8-Ables takes of the first response task from 2-8-10. It takes over for 2-8-Medic, too, on weeknights and holidays. |
