I pulled my gaze away from the wall and like a frightened child, my eyes followed you across the room as you wandered from the door to the sink. I watched you as you turned the tap on and ran the cool water over your raw knuckles. I would love to have seen you squirm as the coldness touched your open wounds, penetrating to your nerves. But the pain didn't faze you. It never did. You had your back turned to me, but you were aware that I was looking at you, my eyes were boaring into the back of your skull, searching for something beneath the bone. I was looking for your thoughts, looking for your reasons, searching but never finding. You turned towards me and our eyes met. You cut your eyes into mine, scoring my innocent face with an invisible knife. `She deserved it' you said like she was the one to blame. It was your fault, but never would you believe it. Nothing was ever your fault. You just used everyone as your scapegoat. `I said nothing' I replied, tearing my eyes from yours, hating to see the fire burning inside. You grabbed your coat and rampaged through the back door, slamming it hard, almost ripping it from its hinges. I cringed, just like I had last night when exactly the same thing happened. Except last night, I didn't see you run from the situation. I only heard you. All I was capable of was listening to you thunder through the house as I lay lifeless on the floor. I was lucky to be alive, I only hoped she was too. As I heard your car leave, I knew it was safe. For now. I managed to prise my fingers away from the table's edge and push the chair out so I could stand up. I quietly and cautiously made my way towards the living room. The door was closed and my heart pounded as a sick feeling rose in my throat. I could feel my pulse rise as I stepped closer to the door. I gently pushed it open with the tip of my fingers. I heard it creak and then the loud bang as it hit the wall. The room was silent and seemed empty, but I knew that it wasn't. I walked towards her as she whimpered, covering her face from my view. I placed my hand on her shoulder. She jumped as if my touch had pierced her skin. `Shh' I said, wrapping my arm around her. `It's going to be all right' I reassured `No it's not!' She replied through tears `It will, I promise' `NO! you're just like him! The promises you keep are not the ones you make!' `I am nothing like him!' I said defending myself `Just go away' she said with a sour tone. `I'm not leaving you like this' I protested She didn't reply. Instead she pulled herself up, using the window ledge as support. She stared blankly out of the window. A group of young children ran past, laughing and playing cheerfully. She turned away and was now facing me. It was then that I saw the extent of the damage you had done to her. Her nose was bloody, her lip split, her eye swollen, a bruise already forming. `You've got to leave him!' I told her `How can I?' she replied `I'll help you' I replied `How?' `Look, I can't bare to see him doing this to you any longer, please I'll help you as best I can' `I don't think it's possible' `I'll take you away from here, we'll move far away from here, somewhere that he can't touch you!' I suggested `And give up everythingjust for me?' she asked, slightly surprised `Everything. You're more important to me than anyone else, or anything else for that matter. What James did to you was wrong and he's gonna pay. Big time'
