A wonderful lady named Geneieve (Underwood) Guthary sent me this information. Thank you Mrs. Geneieve for allowing me to add this to my site.
These are the names of some of the men that Mrs. Geneieve remembers serving our country J.C Mansker and his brother Lavoice, Charles Beck, Jerald Childress (who retired from service) and R.L Weese.
Lavoice was a cousin of Geneieve's and went down on board the ship USS Indianapolis. Here is a link to go in and read about the USS Indianapolis it is great history about the ship that alot of people didn't know about. So click on the picture below of the USS Indianapolis and it will take you there. Once there you can click on Indy's final crew and it will give a list of all who went down with her. |

On another of pages there were interviews by people of Knobel about the German Prisoners used in Knobel. This is a story that Mrs. Geneieve's Aunt Imogene Green use to tell. (In Geneieve's own words.) "She and Uncle Buford lived east of town in one of Uncle Cecil Eaton's houses and the prisoners were clearing land right directly across the road in front of her house. There was one (I don't remember what they called him) but, anyway, he was allowed to come across to their house and fill the water jugs from their pump. She said one day she looked out the window and Brenda (her daughter about 2) was out by the pump with him and she thought "Oh my God". Said when he left she was gonna watch him but he and Brenda dissappeared. I guess Aunt Imogene panicked and when she went out the front door he was sitting on the edge of th porch talking to Brenda and told Aunt Imogene, "Don't worry I won't hurt her I have one just about her size back home. Aunt Imogene said she felt so sorry for him so they would watch for him to go get water and as he left , she and Brenda would go out on the porch and talk to him so he could see Brenda. |
