The Archer children: Carl, Della, Winford and Henry came to KNobel in 1909. Two older sisters Etha and Willie married and made their home in Lamar Co. Texas. They were all born to Henry Marron and Kathryn Rosetta (Gordon) Archer in Ada Oklahoma at the time it was called Indian Territory. Their dad Henry Marron Archer died just before their last child Henry was born in 1905. After Henry was born their mother Kate (as she was called) took her children and moved back to Lamar Co. Texas to be near her family. Kate met a man by the name of William Henry Eaton he went by the name Will. She married him amd they moved to Knobel Arkansas on a little farm south of Knobel. Life wasn't as simple on a farm as it is today. They plowed the ground with a team and plow, chopping and picking cotton by hand, working from sun up to sunset all working together to make ends meet. They raised cotton, potatoes, watermelon and strawberries for market. Winford and Henry were hunters and trappers in their younger days. They trapped coon and mink and would stetch them on boards and hang them up to dry until they was ready to take to market for money. They killed duck and used the feathers to make feather beds and pillows. They would have a hog killing day. After the hogs were killed they would take big 50 gallon drums with scalding hot water and put the hog in and then pull them out and scrape the hogs clean. An old smoke house was out back where meat was smoked and cured and hung for the cold winter. Soap was made in a black kettle from the fat of the hogs. Nothing was thrown away everything was usable. They had a orchard with peach, apple and plum trees, and grape vines. From this they made their juice, jelly and jams. Big gardens were made to eat through the summer and canned the rest for winter. In 1918 they lost brother Carl in Knobel and their oldest sister Etha Tx. just a few days apart when the flu was so bad it killed so many people through out the country. Della married Taylor Fraine and Winford & Henry married sisters. Winford married Hazel Wiseman and Henry married Atla Wiseman. They raised their families in and around Knobel. Some of their descendents still live in and around Knobel. They were laid to rest in the Bond cemetary just outside of town. |
