The origins of Italys tankettes lie with similar British vehicles of the 1920s.  And while most countries had abandoned such vehicles by WWII, Italys armored forces had a desperate shortage of superior tank models, so the tankettes saw service throughout the war.  While the thin armor of the CV-33 made it terribly vulnerable to any enemy fire, the vehicle showed a surprising amount of versatility.  Separate models were armed with a variety of weapons, including machine guns, flame throwers, 37mm guns, and even 47mm anti-tank guns.  Unfortunately for the hapless crews of the tankettes, the main gun armed models were few and far between, and the more numerous machine gun armed variant was totally helpless against most any allied tank.  For all intensive purposes, the CV-33 and other Italian tankettes were obsolete by the late 1930s, and stood little chance on the WWII battlefield.
