The T-26 began its life as a copy of the Vickers 6-ton twin turret tank.  Original models had no main gun, rather they were armed with double machine guns in separately slewing sections of the turret.  Later, a main gun was added, and 1 machine gun was retained.  Finally, a different turret with a single main gun was installed.  A great number of T-26's were in service at the beginning of Russia's entrance into the war.  These tanks suffered heavily against the Germans.  And while much improved models existed, there were simply not enough of them, so the T-26's soldiered on at a heavy price.
