Designed and developed exclusively as an Infantry Tank, the Matilda 1 first went into production in 1937.  The concept behind the tank was a vehicle that need only keep pace with advancing infantry.  The main draw back of this mark of Matilda is its lack of a tank gun, and crews found the machine gun to be lacking in most situations.  However, the Matilda did have incredibly thick frontal armor for its time.  German anti-tank gunners found the tank nearly invincible to their guns during the battle of France.
