Following along the line of the Matilda and Matilda 2, the Chuchill was designed as the next generation infantry tank.  Due to war time pressure, the tank went from design stage to mass production in a mere 11 months.  Because of such rapid development, the tank suffered from many complications in its first year of service.  The tank also suffered from the out-dated and under powered 2 pounder gun.  Later models made up for this defficency with a newer 6 pounder, and later a 75mm gun.  The greatest virtue of the Churchill was its thick armor, in some marks it was thicker then that of the Tiger tank.  An attempt was made to upgrade the main gun to a 17 pounder.  This would in effect give the Churchill the armor
and firepower of a tiger tank.  Unfortunetly the so dubbed 'Black Prince' never came into being.  Never the less the other marks of Churchill tanks performed admirably on all fronts they were deployed.
