The Italian L 6/40 was produced as the replacement for the CV-33 tankette series.  While this replacement was certainly a step up over the obsolete tankettes, it still fell far behind the tanks of the enemy, and, could not be produced in numbers enough to entirely replace older models.  The tank itself was unremarkable, showing many prewar design features such as dangerous riveted armor, an undermanned crew, and exceptionally light armor and armament.  The fact that Italian armor technology hardly surpassed this level until it capitulated in 1943 goes a long way to explain the lack of success achieved by Italian armored formations.
