| A27 Cromwell Crew: 5 Armament: 6 pounder or 75mm or 95mm howitzer, 2 BESA mg's Armor: 76mm maximum, 8mm minimum Weight: 28,000 kg Performance: 40 mph road speed, 173 miles range History: Served with British Army 1942-1950 The Cromwell emerged from the requirement of a 'heavy cruiser" tank. What the tank became was really the UK's first medium main battle tank, roughly equivalent to the American Sherman. The tank was originally to be armed with a 6 pounder gun, but this was found to be to inadequate, especially when used to fire HE shells. Thus the main armament was changed to a 75mm cannon. The Cromwell was a fast and agile tank, and a new Meteor engine was exceptionally reliable. All in all the Cromwell was an excellent tank, although it would never fully equip the British army, as it was always supplemented with American Shermans. |
