CHRISTENING SHAWL

Materials:  1 cone Texere Pure Silk
Pair of 4.00mm needles, circular 4.00mm needle

The shawl is made in one piece from the centre outwards but the four side borders could be worked separately and then joined together.  If you choose to do it this way then begin every border row with a yarn forward, as for the centre, and then herringbone stitch these edges together before working the scalloped edging.

CENTRE; worked back and forth.
Using the pair of 4mm needles, cast on 3 stitches
Knit 1 row. Continuing in g st work yf, knit to end of every row until yf, K8  has been worked:
Start diamond pattern

1) yf, k4, yf, k2tog, k3
2) and every alternate row: yf, k to end
3) yf, k3, *s1, k1, psso, yf, k1, yf, k2tog, k3
5)      yf, *k6, yf, k2tog*, k to end
710) yf, k to end
11)   yf, k5, yf, s1, k1, psso, k6; yf, s1, k1, psso, K4
13)   yf, K4, rep row 3 from * twice, k 1
15)   yf, k1, rep row 5 from * to * twice, k to end
17-20)  yf, k to end

continue in pattern, working yf at beg of every row and placing diamonds alternately as set after every 10th row.  So Row 21 will be:

yf (k6, yf, s1, k1, psso) 3 times, k to end

On 3rd row of 9th repeat of diamonds, start decreasing at the end of every row by working to last 4sts, then working k3tog tbl, k1.
Continue to work the yf at the beg of every row.
When 3 sts remain, do not break off yarn but using the circular needle, pick up and knit 45 loops from each edge, all around the central panel. Mark the start of each corner and pick up 3 sts in each corner stitch; mark the end of the round with a different colour and pick up 3 sts here.

BORDER, worked in the round
Join into a ring and purl 1 round.  (If you want to avoid purling rounds, work back and forth from here, working yf at the beg of each row. There will just be one corner to join at the end).

NB: At each corner work yf, k1, yf on every alternate row.  This will not appear in the following instructions.

1) Purl
2) Purl
3) Knit
4) k2, *yf, k2tog, k1, rep from * all around
5) knit
6) purl
7) purl

HORSESHOE PATTERN
Each side of the border is worked as follows:

1) K5, *(yf, k4, k3tog, k4, yf, k1) 4 times, k to corner.
2) And every alt row, purl
3) k6 *(k1, yf, k3, k3tog, k3, yf, k2) 4 times, k to corner.
5) k7 *(k2, yf, k2, k3tog, k2, yf, k3) 4 times, k to corner.
7)k8 *(k3, yf, k1, k3tog, k1, yf, k4) 4 times, k to corner.
9)k9 *(k4, yf, k3tog, yf, k5) 4 times, k to corner

  10-12) purl

These 12 rows form the pattern.  Take more stitches into pattern when there are enough at each end;  so row 13 will be;
13)k4, k2tog, yf, k1; work as for row 1 from *; yf, k2tog, k to corner

When 4 repeats of the pattern have been worked;
Purl 2 rows
Next row:  k2, *yf, k2tog, k1; rep from * to last 2, k2

Knit 1st st of next round then cast on 13sts onto to left hand needle

k12, k next st together with corresponding edge stitch of border, turn

SCALLOPED EDGING, worked back and forth
1)  sl 1,  k1, yf, k2tog, yf, k2tog, k1, **(yf, k2togtbl) twice, yf, k2**
2) and every alt row) knit to last st, k 2 tog (1 st from edging together with 1 st from border) turn
3) as row 1 from to , k2, as row 1 from ** to **
5)  as row 1 from to , k3, as row 1 from ** to **
7)  as row 1 from to , k4, as row 1 from ** to **
9)  as row 1 from to , k5, as row 1 from ** to **
11) as row 1 from to , k2, yf, k2tog, k2, as row 1 from ** to **
13) as row 1 from to , k2tog tl, yf, k1, yf, k2tog, k2, as row 1 from ** to **
15) as row 1 from to , k2, yf, k2tog, k1, **k2tog, (yf, k2tog) 3 times**, k1
17) as row 1 from to , k4, as row 15 from ** to **
19) as row 1 from to , k3, as row 15 from ** to **
21) as row 1 from to , k2, as row 15 from ** to **
23) as row 1 from to , k1, as row 15 from ** to **
25) as row 1 from to , as row 15 from ** to **
27) sl 1, k1, yf, k2tog, yf, sl 1, k2tog, psso, (yf, k2tog) 3 times, k1
28) knit to last st, k 2 tog

These 28 rows form the scalloped edging.
When there are approx 8 stitches left before each corner, work alternate rows of the edging without knitting the last stitch together with a border stitch.  This will give some fullness at the corners; do the same for 8 stitches after each corner.

When all of the border stitches have been used up, cast off loosely and join this edge together with the cast on stitches of the edging.

Pin out the shawl, pulling out each point of the edging and spray it lightly.  Leave it to dry pinned to a folded sheet.
