What is this about? Each cigarette represents an entire non-smoking day. The first day was June 25, 2002 the last day June 24, 2003. The objective was to knit a cigarette for each day of not smoking, for one year. And, Ive succeeded.

Why? I needed to quit smoking. I smoked for 10 years, yes, a rookie to some, but it counted for one third of my life. Last summer I graduated from college and came home to Astoria without any job prospects. My daily routine consisted of me, literally rolling out of bed (our bed was on the floor). Dressing for the day required skill and agility, neither of which I could muster; therefore, I spent most of the day in my PJs, whacked out on coffee, no food and 10-12 cigarettes. Then my boyfriend would return home after a long day at the grocery store to a dirty house and a cold oven. I must say, I could not fit toilet-cleaner into the schedule; there wasnt one minute of time between electronic solitaire and whatever was on the t.v. Also, I was running out of money. Wait a second, I did not have a job. Oh, thats right, I started using the credit card for groceries.

The point. I was on the road to becoming a smelly sad girl. I needed something to make me: 1. quit smoking and 2. something to obsess over while my life was on pause.

Is that it? There is a part two to this project, called Chain-Knitting. Perhaps youve heard of it or have even seen it. It looks like a big ball of yarn, about 21 inches in diameter (roughly 260 feet long when not in a ball.) I knitted a chain for 4 months. It helped me keep my hands busy while I endured the cravings. Did I mention that I quit cold turkey? No patches, no gums, no hypnotist, just balls of yarn.

You may also me asking yourself the following questions:

How do I acquire a Knitted Cigarette? If you would like to purchase a cigarette, or if you have any questions, please contact Mariah Manners at one of the addresses provided at the top of the screen. Cigarettes are $30 each.

Can I have more than one?  Why, yes. But, a number of the cigarettes have been purchased; if you are interested in a particular day, lets correspond and find you a suitable choice.  See AVAILABLE DATES.

How soon will I receive my cigarette? Cigarettes are not yet available to take home. But I will promptly send you the three Knitted Cigarettes newsletters published this year.

And? Thanks to you for checking out my quitting smoking project, a year in the life of a new ex-smoker.

Thanks to the following persons in making this project possible:

Betty M, Jessica S, Marilyn S, Mick, Susan P, and to the many who donated yarn. AND a big thanks, to the sponsors.

Yours truly,

Mariah Manners
