>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Knights of Shining Light<<<<<<<<<<<<<< The building was rather cold and it echoed as they walked to the lab. Bill and Paula were the only two in the big building. They swiped their security passes on the door lock; it buzzed and opened slightly. Bill pulled it open and held the door for Paula, even at work he was all gentleman. Thats what she loved about him he always looked out for her, and her needs. They had been dating now for almost a year, neither one pushing for any further commitment from the other. Just enjoying the relationship they had and each others company, but they did love each other and both knew it. Their work helped to keep their minds off of it as well, they were so close to completing it. It would be the biggest discovery that had ever been if they could get it to work. Bill and Paula both were quantum physics scientists, and were working on, what everyone in this field had sought for decades, the final sequence to time travel. The entire building they were working in was, in all reality, nothing more than a giant electro magnetic generator. They had been able to stabilize the quantum foam years ago, but still had not been able to find a way to harness the foam and figure out the final sequence of events to time travel. They were closer than anyone else was, and knew it was just a matter of time before they unlocked the door to being able to go back in time. Paula went to the big console of buttons and switches and began flipping switches and turning knobs. In the distance they could hear the giant gears turning and the soft whir of the generator, as it powered up. Bill was busy gathering up papers they had been keeping their trials and errors on. Would it be today he wondered, as he took the stack of binders over to the rolling cart they used in the lab they had dubbed, time capsule control. They pushed the cart out of the holding lab and into the wide-open expanse, where the generator and the time capsule control booth were. Again Bill swiped his card, and because this was such a secure area, Paula also had to swipe her card to gain access. Once inside all sound was blocked out, the subtle hiss of air was the last outside sound they heard as the door shut, locked and sealed behind them. They sat behind the big easel and began placing the binders from the cart on it. Opening the binders they began reviewing the work they had already preformed. Organic material could be atomized; that they knew from transporting rats from one platform to another. Dematerializing them on one and rematerializing them on the other, although they werent quite the same as they had been before. Some how they had to figure out how to get them back in the same form they were when they started, this was the final sequence they needed. After they got that figured out it would be simple to surf the foam to another time and place. The storm was raging outside now, great sheets of rain slammed into the roof of the building, thunder clapped and lighting flared. Nestled in the control lab though Bill and Paula were oblivious to anything going on outside. With no windows to see out of they didnt know the storm crowded in around them. Paula went to the end of the lab and opened the small cage that held Samson. Samson was the large white rat that always sat on Paulas shoulder as she ran tests. His long pink tail drooping down into her top pocket as he watched unknowingly as she worked. Bill made settings on the control panels that corresponded to the ones they had jotted down in the binders from past experiments, casting a side glance at Paula and her rat chuckling to himself. Paula placed one of Samsons smaller friends on the platform and closed the door to the cage he was in. She had just returned to the controls and was moving the lever that controlled the power output, when a blinding flash of light engulfed them all. What was happening they all 3 wondered? Samson was being included. They could see through the light, rain pouring in from a gash in the far end of the building, they had been hit by lighting. The light, a brilliant white to start with now was beginning to turn to shades of blue and then to pink. Whats happening Paula screamed, grabbing Samson and forcing him into the pocket of her lab coat. A gigantic power surge from the lighting strike I think, said Bill as he scrambled for the controls and looking at the gauges. All of the gauges are redlined we are way over the maximum output of even our generator he exclaimed. And in that instant they were no longer in the lab, for that matter they werent even in the building. They really didnt know where they were. They awoke lying on soft yellow sand, a great stone wall to the side of them. Paula lie there, motionless looking around, only her eyes moving taking in all she could see. She felt Samson move in her pocket and scurry out. Now he was at her ear poking his tiny wet nose into it, she moved and scooped him back up sitting as she did so. Bill was on his feet and stretched out a hand to Paula to help her up. I dont know where we are, but we arent in Texas any more Samson, giving the small rodent a scratch behind his ear. They took a few steps away from the wall and moved down it a ways to find a gate with several, what looked like old roman guards, standing there. Just as they saw the guards, a pugish, little imp of a being hit Bill savagely from behind. Immediately the guard sprang into action, slashing the imp with a gleaming long sword, striking it dead. Die like the scum you are the guard proclaimed as he walked back to his post paying no heed to Bill, Paula or Samson. What was that? he exclaimed, rubbing the back of his head and neck. Out of no where a voice replied it was an orc pawn, actually a deathfist orc to be exact Bill and Paula both whirled around looking for the person behind the voice, but saw no one. Here I am said the voice again, and in front of their eyes a young man appeared out of the shadows. Their jaws dropped as they saw this and were unable to utter even the simplest of words. Are you alright? asked the man. Yes, at least I think so, said Bill who are you, and where are we he asked. I am Exor he replied and this, this is the western side of Freeport, where did you think you were? Or are you not from around here? he asked. No, no we are not from here, but I am pleased to meet you Exor, can you tell us some more about this place? Bill asked. I would be glad to he said, come have a seat near the guards so those damnable orc will not bother us Bill and Paula, along with Samson, walked a few more steps closer to the guards and their new friend Exor. He offered them some food and water and sat with them telling them of the wonders of Freeport. What is your name friend? he asked. Bill stammered a little, not wanting to tell him his name. Texan said Paula, his name is Texan, and I am, she thought for a moment Xavieras after a school of higher learning she once knew. Pleased to meet both of you, Exor said. He sat with Bill and Paula for hours telling them of all the wonderful things that were here in Freeport, and warned them of things in the surrounding lands to stay away from. Both Bill and Paula drank it all in, not quite believing what they were hearing. It seems as though when they were struck by lighting, back at the lab, the over load on the quantum circuits didnt put them back in time, but rather transported them ahead in time, some 1000 odd years, ahead in the future. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Thus Begins the Saga <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< |
