'Zyklon beige' sport shoe renamed

British sporting goods manufacturer UMBRO apologized Tuesday for naming one of its running shoes "Zyklon beige," explaining that it had not connected its label with the "Zyklon B" gas used by the Nazis in extermination camps.
It changed the name to "Stealth Blanc" on its Internet site last night.
Dr. Shimon Samuels, the Wiesenthal Center's director for international liaison, said Umbro's "outrageous misuse of the Holocaust is an insult to its victims and survivors, an encouragement to neo-Nazis and skinheads who terrorize the football terraces, and a dishonor to sport itself."
The center demanded the immediate withdrawal of the product and related advertisements. It also asked for a public apology and a condemnation of those behind Umbro's marketing strategy.
Nick Crook, the company's marketing communications planner, said "the name was not chosen deliberately. The naming of the shoe is purely coincidental and was not intended to communicate any connotations. I would like the opportunity to express our sincere regret that the Zyklon name may have upset someone."
He added that the company is investigating the matter.
