Note: I think this was inspired by reading the events of No Man’s Land… but I
can’t remember, because I just now found the story in an old notebook. The
narrator is Stephanie Brown, I know that much.

Worth It

I didn’t want you… didn’t plan for you.
I’d left your father long ago, long before
I even knew you existed. Whoever it was I had children with, I didn’t want it
to be him. There were a lot of things that I didn’t want… but apparently, what
I wanted wasn’t important.
For nine months I carried you, dealing
with the weight-gain, the stress, the stares, the loneliness and the swollen
ankles. The shame. Now, in this wasteland pit, I
finally have you out of my body and in my arms.
Just for a little while. You see, you
won’t be mine for long.
Your eyes are so blue. Your
fingers and toes, so tiny. Is that my nose? And--- are you looking at
me?
I think of the pain of labor. It seems so dull
now, and insignificant. Out of all the heartache and agony, came you.
And you were worth it.
