Due to the recent trade the Pawtucket Flying Dutchmen need to make one more cut from
their pitching staff to get down to their 16-player limit. Unfortunately that player will have to be
1929 Rookie of the Year Ed Wells. Ed has had a terrific career in Pawtucket and it was a struggle to
make this cut. Ed has been hampered by injuries the past two seasons and did not have a very good spring
training. Last season he was limited to one start that he lost. We are sad to see him go, but are
confident that he will be picked up to help someone's pitching staff, possibly Hattiesburg.
The newest members of the Dutchmen arrived in Pawtucket today just in time to participate in the
festivities for the opening of the new season. Russ Van Atta was a willing participant in the pie
throwing booth and Willis Hudlin felt like he was back in Wagoner Okalahoma when he was asked to
assist in the hog-calling contest.
Lloyd Waner was reluctant to participate at first still bitter over the trade that brought him
here from Montgomery. He was quoted as saying; I'm going from a contender to a team that was
below .500 last season. The only benefit I see out of this is to be able to come out from underneath
my brother and become my own man. Later on in the day Lloyd was placed on the injured reserve list
after injuring his shoulder over exerting himself in the butter-churning contest. An upset Honus
Wagner has banned any Pawtucket player from ever participating in that contest again.
