ST LOUIS BUBONIC PLAGUE 1932 PREVIEW

Johnny Allen is a sure-thing pitcher, and should contribute immediately. Could he be the missing cog for the 
Plague this year? Bud Tinning will also bolster the bull-pen. Dick Siebert, barely 20, is many years away from 
first sacking duties, Boze Berger is an adequate infielder, at best. 
Grade: A-


CATCHING
After 3 solid seasons, it appears as though Jimmie Wilson (.282 career average) might be out of a starting job. 
Rookie Ray Hayworth had an outstanding spring and appears poised to snatch the starting job from Wilson, at 
least in a platoon capacity. Luke Sewell and rookie Roy Spencer are capable back-ups.

INFIELD
The left side of the St Louis infield is strong. Two-time running home run champ Jimmie Foxx is the league's 
best first baseman, and Tony Lazzeri is hoping to rebound from an injury-plagues 1931. Shortstop is handled by 
the capable but replaceable Charlie Gelbert, and Joe Sewell is nearing the end of a fantastic career at third 
base. There are some babes-in-the-woods, such as Red Rolfe and Marv Owen, but as long as there are no injuries 
to the starting four infielders, they should do just fine.

OUTFIELD
It seems like every team has a good outfield these days, and St Louis is no exception. Al Simmons (.325 30 hr 
95 rbi) is the best hitter in the league, and Earle Combs and Sam West are also very solid performers. Off the 
bench comes Twitchy Porter, and Porter could be a starter on virtually any other club.

STARTING PITCHING
Guy Bush (7-12) has come along after numerous burnings-in-effigy, and was unhittable this spring. Rookie 
Dizzy Dean's big talent should match his big mouth, and if Mel Harder pitches as well this year as he did 
in the second half last year, these three are an imposing trio. Add them to veteran Sam Jones (47-44 career), 
St Louis has a good chance for the title.

BULLPEN
A lot of the bullpen successes require some help from rookie Bud Tinning, as well as last year's team leader 
in saves Wilcy Moore. The Plague isn't that strong in the pen, but it is not all that weak either, especially 
in experience. 
Grade: C+


OUTLOOK
St Louis barely finished in last place last season, but it wouldn't be much of a stretch to think they will 
win their division this year. St Louis has the best starting line-up in the SouthEastern Division. However, 
their shortcomings are on the bench, for the team lacks depth. Simply put: No injuries, and St Louis wins 
the division. However, since that is highly unlikely, and they will have to go to their bench eventually...... 
PROGNOSIS: Second Place
