GAME 6
BURNS EDGE FREMONT 1-0; SERIES TIED
FREMONT, MI (AP): Paul Waner's clutch double in the top of eighth inning scored Woody English with the only
run of the game as the Montgomery Burns defeated the Fremont Furtraders 1-0 in Game 6 of the DBS World Series.
The stage is now set for a winner-take-all Game 7 tomorrow in Fremont.
As has been the case all season, the starting pitching of both teams dominated the game. Fremont starter Ed
Brandt allowed a single to leadoff hitter Smead Jolley, then proceeded to retire the next fourteen consecutive
batters that he faced. Montgomery starter Tommy Bridges matched Brandt seemingly pitch-for-pitch, retiring the
first eleven Furtraders that he faced before he was touched for a single by Earl Averill in the fourth.
Lou Gehrig followed Averill with another single, and suddenly, Fremont had a scoring situation in place with two
out. Bridges, however, promptly struck out Riggs Stephenson for the third out of the inning and the beginning
of a frustrating afternoon for Stephenson. Riggs made the last out in the 4th, 6th and 8th innings, all with a
runner at second.
Brandt was so overpowering that Montgomery did not get another base hit until the eighth inning. Woody English,
substituting for the injured Eric McNair led off the eighth with a base hit. One out later, Jolley moved
English to second and he scored when Paul Waner's drive split the outfielder for a double, the only extra
base hit of the game. The hit would make a winner of Wes Ferrell, the former Montgomery ace demoted to the
bullpen for the Series. Ferrell took over for Bridges in the sixth and pitched three scoreless innings.
Fremont's frustrations were embodied in Stephenson. With two out and two on in the sixth, he lined out to
shortstop to end the threat. Two innings later, Arky Vaughn stole second with two out to move into scoring
position, but Ferrell struck out Riggs to end the threat.
Firpo Marberry entered the game and retired the Furtraders in order to end the game and complete the
Montgomery comeback from being down 3 games to 1. It has been the second year in a row that Montgomery has
forced a Game Seven after trailing significantly in the Series.
The stage is now set for a crucial Game 7. Fremont ace Dazzy Vance will take the ball for the Furtraders.
Vance has been Fremont's stopper all season and is putting the finishing touches on a fabulous 1932
campaign. Vance was dominant in his only other Series appearance a victory in Game Three in which he allowed
only three hits, one run and struck out 10. Opposing him will be the Burns' Pat Malone, the winningest
pitcher in DBS history. Malone will be making his third start of the Series, after winning the opener and
taking a hard-luck loss in Game Four.
