KNIGHTS WIN 14 of 15; D-WIDES CLING TO PENNANT HOPES

The Harlem Knights (87-48) have won 14 of their last 15, opening up a lead of 11.5 games over the Sahara Jihad (75-59), who have all but totally collapsed and have dropped nine straight. Pawtucket continues to flounder around in third place at 57-75, while Fremont (54-83) have a virtual lock on the first round pick in the upcoming draft.
Hattiesburg (66-68) continue to hang around despite a disasterous summer. They trail Montgomery (72-64) by 5 games. North Dallas (67-71) have managed to pull within 6 games despite numerous injuries, while St Louis (61-71) stand at nine games back, mathematically in it but realistically not.

TRADING DEADLINE NEARS

With September 1 only a few days away, the DBS trade deadline is a big moment for the contenders and pretenders for 1931. Harlem would appear to be unlikely to make any moves. They are solid in every position, and have a sizable lead. Sahara could pick up an infielder, but one wonders if that would be enough to catch the red-hot Knights. In the NorthEast, Montgomery wouldn't be hurt to find someone, anyone, who can hit against lefthanded pitching. Hattiesburg could use some more hitting, but do they have anything to offer besides draft picks? North Dallas might be served by finding a pitcher for these last 15+ games.

Not that all trades during the stretch run help out. Two years ago, the Knights picked up Babe Ruth from St Louis, yet the Knights failed to catch Pawtucket. (Granted, Ruth has since been an incredible addition to the Knights line-up.) Also in 1930, Montgomery added George Uhle and Rogers Hornsby but still failed to catch St Louis.

HANDICAPPING THE SOUTHEAST RACE

For the second straight year, all four teams are still in the running for the SouthEast pennant. But with Montgomery leading Hattiesburg by 5 and North Dallas by 6, can can either team catch the Burns?
St Louis is nine games out, and anything can happen, but it would take an incredible run for St Louis to capture the flag. Especially with a lot of intra-division games coming up. Montgomery travels to Hattiesburg for a three-game set this week in a marquee match-up. To say Hattiesburg must win this series is an understatement. The DoubleWides livelyhood depends on it. Montgomery has won 10 of the 19 meetings this season. Although Hattiesburg has that series and another 5 against Harlem, they play the remainder of their schedule against Pawtucket and Fremont. Montgomery still has to play North Dallas, St Louis and Pawtucket, while North Dallas, aside from Montgomery, have Harlem coming up. So it will not be an easy task for either of these teams.
