HARLEM, SAHARA KEEP PACE; HATTIESBURG UPS LEAD TO 3

The Battle in the NorthEast continues, as Harlem (33-26) continues to stay 1.5 ahead of Sahara (31-27). Harlem's pitching staff went through a stretch where they only gave up 4 runs in six games. Sahara has been bolstered by rookie Lefty Gomez, who is 6-0. Just a heads-up, these two teams only meet twice more this season. Fremont (30-30) has won 4 in a row and closed to within 3.5 of Harlem, and Pawtucket has managed to win a few here and there to come in at 26-34.
In the SouthEast, Hattiesburg (35-24) has managed to open thheir lead of Montgomery (32-27) to 3 games, as Lefty Stewart and Tommy Thomas (tops in the league with 9 wins) lead the way for the surprising DoubleWides. Meanwhile, St Louis (25-34) and North Dallas (24-34) continue to struggle.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Johnny Vergez

Player of the week for (May 29th � June 4th) is 3B of the Freemont Furtraders Johnny Vergez. Johnny is having an excellent rookie year and figures to be a factor in the voting for rookie of the year. For the week Johnny batted .476 (10-21) hitting two home runs and four doubles, knocking in five Furtraders and scoring six times himself with three stolen bases. Johnny is currently on an eleven game hitting streak, his best game on June 3rd where he went 3-5 with two runs, 2 runs batted in and hit a home run.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH, MAY

Frankie Frisch

Player of the month for the month of May 1931 is Second Basemen for the Hattiesburg Doublewides Frankie (The Fordham Flash) Frisch. Frankie played in 28 games for the D-Dubs batting .308 (36-117), hitting two home runs, nine doubles and one triple, knocking in twenty runs while scoring nineteen times himself, while stealing nine bases. For the month Frankie had fourteen multiple hit games including eleven two hit games, one three hit game and two four hit games. Frankie also had five multiple RBI games, four multiple run games and one multiple stolen base game. Frankie led the league in doubles and was second in stolen bases for the month.

PITCHER OF THE MONTH, MAY

Lefty Stewart

Pitcher of the Month for the Month of May 1931 is LHP Lefty Stewart of the Hattiesburg Doublewides. For the month Lefty was 4-1 with a 1.74 ERA, allowing only nine earned runs in 46 2/3 innings. Lefty pitched two complete games in five starts, one being a shutout against Montgomery on May 17th. Lefty�s only loss came on May 22nd against St. Louis, Lefty pitched a complete game allowing one earned run through those nine innings. Lefty's last win for the month was against Pawtucket where lefty pitched 13 1/3 innings giving up only four earned runs. For the month Lefty batted .333 (5-15) with one home run, one double and one triple, knocked in six runs and scored four times himself.
