MONTGOMERY BURNS 1931 PREVIEW
DRAFT
Ripper Collins is a can't-miss prospect, but after him they took some guys who only fill a few holes, but not all that much for the long term, although Tony Piet might become a decent hard-working infielder.
Grade: B
CATCHING
They have the greatest catcher in the game, Mickey Cochrane. Pinky Hargrave and Johnnie Heving are adequate back-ups.
Grade: A
INFIELD
Dale Alexander is coming off a fairly good year (.261 25 HR 93 RBI), but rookie Ripper Collins is waiting in the wings. Pie Traynor is still the best third baseman in the league. But the questions are in the middle, and the middle is such a crucial area. Can Woody English handle full-time shortstop duties? And who will succeed in the mysterious second-base position? Rogers Hornsby still might be able to hit, but at 35, can he handle the rigors of a full season? Note: North Dallas castoff Wally Gilbert is an interesting addition, but probably will not help much.
Grade: B-
OUTFIELD
A full season is needed from the Waner brothers if Montgomery is to compete. However, both insist that they are healthy. Heinie Manush had a very disappointing season last year, and is sorely needed. The rest of the outfield is a bunch of part-time role-players.
Grade: B
STARTING PITCHING
All eyes are on Wes Ferrell as he aims to repeat on his Cy Young season (19-5, 2.06 ERA). Pat Malone (16-11 3.96) and Fred Marberry (10-12 4.73) support Ferrell well. Willis Hudlin, Phil Collins, or newcomer Syl Johnson (5-16 3.84 with Hershey) all could start, but neither are anything other than a fourth or fifth man.
Grade: B
BULLPEN
A lot of openings here, but no one is outstanding. Rookie Tommy Bridges is expected to appear, as is Sheriff Blake. Does Uhle have anything left? With last years stoppers, Phil Collins (14 saves) and Willis Hudlin (10 saves) possibly being starters, who will take the slack?
Grade: C+
OUTLOOK
Montgomery appears to be in a transition, as some of their past stars are in the twilight, and the younger ones aren't quite ready to come up. Don't expect an incredible finish, but don't be surprised by one, either.
PROGNOSIS: Third Place
