GAME 2
MALONE, BURNS FIGHT OFF ELIMINATION; WIN GAME FOUR 4-2
Meanwhile, Malone showed the form that made him a 16-game winner in 1931. The Mudcat was consistent in retiring the dangerous heart of the Knight
order, not allowing a hit to Babe Ruth, Chuck Klein and Don Hurst. He also managed to avoid trouble with clutch pitches when needed. In both the fifth
and sixth innings, Malone was able to work out of scoring threats with Harlem runners in scoring position.
Montgomery added a pair of runs in the top of the eighth. With one out, Collins laced a soft two hopper to Cronin who misfired into the dugout for an
error. The Burns capitalized on this opportunity and produced three singles, the last by pinch-hitter Smead Jolley. When the dust cleared, two runs had
crossed the plate and Montgomery led 4-0.
The Knights were able to connect against the Burns' bullpen. George Uhle replaced Malone and he promptly surrendered a solo homer to Klein.
However, the beleaguered Uhle allowed no further damage and turned the game over to the Burns' stopper Jesse Haines.
Haines suffered a similar fate as Uhle. On his first pitch of the ninth, Harlem's Joe Cronin launched a solo home run into the stands in left, cutting the
Montgomery lead to 4-2. But like Uhle, Haines escaped the ninth without further damage.
But not without drama. Lefty O'Doul singled for the third time in the game with two out, bringing his hit total in the Series a whopping 14. The hit allowed
Babe Ruth to come to the plate. With the stadium packed with tension, and the Great Bambino itching to deliver, Ruth uncoiled a wicked line drive,
screaming for the outfield. However, second baseman Rogers Hornsby was positioned perfectly and he cradled it for the final out of the game.
Although Montgomery won and delayed elimination, no team in baseball history has ever returned from a 3-0 deficit to win a series. Montgomery pins
their hopes for another day on the right arm of Wes Ferrell. Harlem counters with Game One starter Bill Walker, whom they hope will pitch them to a championship.
