HERSHEY SQUIRTS 1930 PREIVEW

Hershey was bad last year. And injuries didn't help. An aging team, there were bright spots in the play of 
Charlie Gehringer and Lou Gehrig. Jack Quinn and Dazzy Vance were pleasant surprises, as was Lance Richbourg 
and Mark Koenig. This year, the road doesn't look much clearer. But Rome wasn't built in a day. 

DRAFT
Wally Berger and George Watkins immediately help the weak outfield, and Carl Fischer should be a welcome 
addition to the staff. Not bad picks, but mayeb too heavy on outfielding, an already abundant position in this league.

CATCHING
The catching core is greatly improving, with rookie Al Lopez, Al Sporher and Bubbles Hargrave all hitting the 
ball well. A platoon system of youngsters is the most viable solution in a confusing situation of who to start. 
Grade: B-


INFIELD
Lou Gehrig and Charlie Gehringer are mainstays, despite Gehrig's poor 1929 season. Charlie is a marvel of 
consistency. But Otto Miller is unproven at third, and Mark Koenig and Leo Durocher are inept. 
Grade: C


OUTFIELD
This outfield is greatly improving. Last year's first round pick, Earl Averill, and this year's first round 
pick, Wally Berger, along with later pick George Watkins, can make this outfield potent at the bat. Lance 
Richbourg and Tom Hughes also will make a contribution. But they are young and unproven, and raw talent might 
not be enough.

STARTING PITCHING
Dazzy Vance, at 39, is getting better with age. Along with dependable starters Hank Johnson and Syl Johnson, 
this staff is getting somewhat better. Can they last the long season?
Grade: B-


BULLPEN
When you can finally fill your rotation, you bullpen gets better. Finally, some experience and talent have 
filtered down to the pen, and this will greatly help out a rotation that might not have the stamina for a long season. 
Grade: C


OUTLOOK
Things are looking better in Hershey, and they might turn some heads. Things are falling into the right places, 
but true success is years away. They could sneak into second place, though.
