GAME 2

BURNS EVEN SERIES, 3-0

MONTGOMERY (AP) – The Montgomery Burns evened the 1929 DBS World Championship Series at one game apiece, defeating the Pawtucket Flying Dutchmen in Game Two 3 to 0. Firpo Marberry, who has been masterful against the Dutchmen this season, allowed only three hits, shutting down the Pawtucket offense and allowing the Burns to draw even as the Series shifts to Pawtucket on Thursday.
An overcast and drizzly afternoon kept the crowd at the Power Plant small, but those on hand saw Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians. The 27 year old Lombardo, a newcomer to the big band scene, impressed the crowd with a musical rendition of The Star Spangled Banner. Shortly thereafter, Vice President of the United States Charles Curtis threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Andrew W. Mellon, the Secretary of the Treasury, as well as several economists and bankers from across the country, accompanied Mr. Curtis to the game. Several of these men, including Mr. Curtis are currently in Montgomery to discuss the recent gains and fluctuations in the stock market.
However, the main topic of today was baseball. Game Two began in a similar fashion to Game One. On the first play of the game, Woody English booted a ground ball off the bat of Johnny Frederick, an eerie reminder of the miscues that doomed the Burns in Game One. Frederick made it to third on a pair of sacrifices, but Burns starting pitching Firpo Marberry ended the inning by inducing a ground out from Game One hero Pinky Whitney.
Marberry, and his counterpart, Pawtucket starting pitcher Ed Wells both looked exceptionally sharp in the opening innings. Wells recorded three strikeouts in the first three innings and only one hit, making the Burns potent offense look feeble in the process.
Montgomery was able to score off of Wells in the fourth inning. Heine Manush led off the inning with a double, and after an out and a walk to Pie Traynor, was brought home on a double by Mickey Cochrane. With runners on second and third and one out, Dutchmen manager Honus Wagner ordered a curious intentional walk to the lefthanded Paul Waner, and pitch to Burns shortstop Woody English, who batted .320 against Pawtucket this season. Wells made the original "Flying Dutchmen" look like a genius when English grounded into a textbook, inning ending 6-4-3 double play.
Firpo The Burns scored again in the seventh and eighth on a Montgomery trademark, the hit and run. This play failed in Game One, but worked to perfection twice in Game Two. In the bottom of the second, pinch-hitter Lew Fonseca drove home a running English with a long single to make the score 2-0, and in the eighth, English was on the hitting end of the play as he drove home a streaking Paul Waner to close the scoring at 3-0.
Marberry, who was lifted for Fonseca, allowed only three hits, and along with Willis Hudlin and Jesse Petty, completely shut down the Pawtucket offense. Petty earned a small measure of revenge with a scoreless ninth to earn the save.
Pawtucket's best chance to score came in the top of the fourth inning when they loaded the bases with three straight singles. Bill Cissell grounded into an inning-ending double play to kill the rally and any other Pawtucket scoring chance. From that point on, the Burns pitching staff allowed only one hit for the remainder of the game, and at one point retired 12 Pawtucket batters in a row.
