May 2001 Newsletter

Dear Brothers,

The next meeting is Thursday June 7, 2001 at 7:30 pm in the parish hall. The May meeting set a record in some 5 years: 21 members!

Chuck Winn will be our Grand Knight for 2001-2002 Tom Valasek will be our Deputy Knight for 2001-2002 Fred Sisneros will be our Treasurer for 2001-2002

We owe genuine thanks to Larry Connell our outgoing Grand Knight and to Paul Saras for the latter's several years as Treasurer.

Other officers: Chancellor - Paul Saras; Recorder - Ric Bendio; Warden - Mark Cantrell; Advocate - Kendal McDevitt; Inside Guard - Kevin Terhaar; Outside Guard -Mat Malamakal; 1st Year Trustee - Dean Schaecher; 2d Year Trustee - Paul Lodge; 3d Year Trustee - Marty Merriman; and, Lecturer to be appointed by the Grand Knight.

Fourth Degree exemplification was announced for June 16, 2001 at new Holy Apostles church in Meridian. Applicants please call Bob Wamalen.

We again voted to donate $500.00 to our sponsored seminarian via the Knights of Columbus - wide "RSVP" program. The check has been sent and in due course, the Supreme Office reimburses us $100.00 as a motivator. Please remember to pray for Rob Cook. We again voted to donate $100.00 to Birthright of Boise; that check was issued and has been delivered. We also again voted $100.00 to our Boy Scout Troop.

The OLR religious education staff enjoyed the cook-out which many of you put on after Mass on Sunday May 6, 2001.

The pancake breakfast on May 20, 2001 had superb food, but a marginal number of eaters. As most of you know, our Council has not freely chosen the dates for the three annual pancakes breakfasts (May, Sept, Dec). Due to classroom space limits, we have been able to use only those few Sundays where no religious education classes are in session. Once the hall expansion project is done, this restriction should ease. Please mark your calendars now for Sept 8 - Sept 9, 2001. Assuming the hall is still available, our next pancake is set for Sept 9, 2001, with the essential tables & chairs arranging, place settings, done after the 5 pm Mass on Saturday Sept. 8, 2001.

For the last two pancakes breakfast Saturday set-ups, we have been short of help. The pancake is our main fundraiser. For this one Knights of Columbus Memo which I will issue as acting Grand Knight, let me be blunt: we need a number of volunteer brothers to control their calendars for the pancakes breakfast set-ups after the Saturday Mass, as well as serving the plates at the breakfast itself.

Ric Bendio was recognized as the Knight of the Year during the breakfast; he is a consistent doer (as is his wife Jan) and among other things, Rick ran the Lenten Friday night soup and bread suppers. Chuck Winn was presented a walnut engraved plaque honoring his five years as scout leader of our Troop 7 (1995-2000). His wife Mary (who fielded some of those hundreds of phone calls on Scouting commitments over those years) also deserves our thanks. Chuck was also Knight of the Month for May 2001.

Speaking of calendar marking, please note Sunday August 26, 2001 for the annual parish Mass and picnic. The new Grand Knight will be asking for some volunteer brothers to buy Pinatas, stuff them with candies, and also put on the children's games, per usual. Please pencil your calendars for Knights of Columbus council meetings on Thursdays July 5, 2001 and Aug 2, 2001 (unless new Grand Knight Chuck Winn decides to cancel or change such dates).

Brother Mike Straight has coordinated our participation for the Bishop's annual barbecues for seminarians. Once he learns this summer's date, he will be seeking a few volunteers. (We thank Mike for regularly supervising the many important details of our pancake breakfasts!) Name Tags: give Financial Secretary Steve Haglund $5.00 for each brother's name tag you want, printing exactly the name (nickname if any) you want; for the ladies, their magnetic, no-make-holes-in-garments tags are $7.50.

On Oct 7, 2001, at 2 pm in St. John's cathedral, our parishioners Chuck Skoro and Pierce Murphy will be ordained permanent deacons. Brothers who are not elk hunting (or those who harvest with arrows or early rifle shots) may wish to attend.

Remember to mark your calendars for the Vocations Holy Hour on the first Monday of each month at 7 pm in our parish chapel, we need more Knights to participate.

Vivat Jesus!
