By profession I am a Surgical Instrument Repair Tech. sometimes called a "Glorified Knife Sharpener".
For the last 17 years I've traveled the west, going to Hospitals, repairing and sharpening surgical instruments. I got into knife making through a friend at work. He always brought me hunting knives to sharpen just before elk season. His unique blades inspired me to make one of my own. My first knife was an 18-inch Bowie made of 1095 High Carbon steel. It took more hours than I'd like to admit. I use stock removal method to make my knives. While heat treating, I use a cryogenic freeze method to insure the hardness of the steel.
Most of my knives I make out of ATS 34 or 440 C Stainless stock. The handle material is mostly laminated
hardwood or a variety of stabilized hardwoods. The bolsters, guards, pins and buttcaps are made of brass, stainless
steel, or nickel silver.
