Xavier is the eldest son of Queen Ellendra, Oberon's last bride. His youth was marked by several noteworthy arguments with his father. Xavier was always perceived as a problem child of sorts. Having never publicly walked the Pattern, Oberon always regarded him as something less than what he had hoped for from his dalliances with Xavier's mother. Not a master of things martial, he devoted himself to study of the arts arcane. For a short time he studied with his older brother Casmir, but found that high sorcery was much too structured to satisfy his desires. His studies never led him farther from Amber than Lucien's shadow Faerie, though it's rumored he once visited Chaos with Lucien on a dare.

Frustrated with his inability, he began painting to relieve his stress. His talents were readily apparent. His portraits resonated with clarity of vision unseen for years in the local art scene. It was only natural that he would eventually find himself studying the Art of Trump. Many of his landscapes and portraits can be found in his immediate siblings quarters, given as gifts for birthdays, or other notable occasions. One of his finest, Alison's Patternwalk, hangs in his apartments in Castle Amber. He marks his work with an eight pointed blue-spark, such as accompany his Trump contacts in multitude.

His social calendar could never have been called full, yet he has had some notable relationships, beginning with a visiting dignitary from Felina, a Shadow on the far side of Ygg when he was but sixteen. Her name was Summer's Breath of the Basstina folk, and since then he's been linked with numerous ladies of Amber's court. Most recently there are rumors of a relationship with a Hellmaid of Chaos, Gilva Hendrake, which occurred during Finnigan's trip to find a lead on the poison that fell his mother, and possibly the same that poisoned Morgan.

His current aspirations include avenging his mother's death and getting to the bottom of Finn's death. He'd like to see Alison in a place of power in Amber, perhaps Marshall of Amber and to return Lucien to his true home here in Amber. Of course, these could be accomplished most easily from the throne, but Xavier doesn't feel he's ready to handle such a task. He has a tendency to react too severely in tense moments. He also curses and his lack of knowledge of the Pattern. He knows he can never rule in Amber without conquering it, but he's currently afraid to attempt traversing it. His attitudes toward Shadow denizens are vaguely indifferent. He recognizes them as part of his own origins, yet he has risen above them. Those truly worthy of his respect he will accept, once they've proven themselves to play the grand game at his level. What game you ask? That of life.
