Borubudur Temple is the greatest Buddhist relic of South East Asia built by the Cailendra dynasty sometime between 750-850 AD. The name Borubudur is believed to have been derived from the Sanskrit words "Vihara Buddha Uhr", which means "Buddhist monastery on the hill". The temple is built in the form of a massive symmetrical stupa, literally wrapped around the hill. Viewed from the air, the whole thing looks like a giant three dimensional tantric mandala. |
