I stayed in Jakarta on a work-related assignment for more than a year giving me the pleasure of mixing and working with the Indonesians. Jakarta is the prime entrance to the Indonesian archipelago. It is a contrast of modern architecture and traditional Indonesian culture. Its quick development into a cosmopolitan city, after all, is a reflection of the economic and political development of the nation.
Jakarta is a combination of traditional and modern, religious and worldly standing side by side in this hustling town. The metropolitan city has radiant post modern high rises and shopping centers, broad avenues stuffed with traffic mount fly overs.
Towering 137 meters over Merdeka square, the National Monument (MONAS) is the most recognizable landmark in Jakarta. It has a giant flame gilded with 35kg of gold. There's a museum of Indonesian history on its base that features 48 dramatic dioramas.
Taman Mini Indonesia is the whole country in one park. It has miniatures of traditional pavilions that represent each province. It also provides a glimpse of art and architecture of the archipelago's diverse ethnic mosaic. Other attractions include a huge Imax theater which offers a cinematic journey of Indonesia.
Taman Impian Jaya Ancol is Jakarta's all-in one recreation park. The Seaworld is an underwater world with walk through a big tunnel in a big aquarium that has a variety of fish and marine life. Dunia Fantasi is a fun park just like a mini Disneyland.
Shopping is one of the biggest attractions in Jakarta. It has dozens of big, dazzling shopping centers like Plaza Senayan and Pasaraya Grande. Jalan Surabaya is a famous flea market with woodcarvings, furniture, brass, jewelry, batik and many (often instant) antiques. It is always fun to browse, but bargain like crazy.
More than 60 km from Jakarta is Taman Safari, a drive-thru nature park, which would allow you to mingle with wild life animals. Along the way to Puncak, the Gunung Mas tea plantation gives a cool and green scenery.
Jakarta is truly an interesting city.
