The Banaue rice terraces located in Ifugao province is the Philippine's contender to the Eight Wonder of the world. At 1300 meters elevation, notched into precipitous green slopes, the rice terraces are the longest continuous project in human history. We went to Banaue by car from Baguio city. The drive took us on a beautiful sightseeing trip around the Cordillera mountain range. Banaue, with all its grandeur, is not only the world's finest example of rice terracing but is considered by its inhabitants as a "stairway to heaven". The rice terraces here are so plentiful that it is believed that if they were placed end to end it has been estimated that they would stretch halfway around the earth !
While we went up the Banaue rice terraces, we also saw a lot of tourists hiking up and down the slopes. While on top of one of the terraces, we had some pictures taken together with the local Ifugao inhabitants and of course bought some souvenirs - hhmmm i wonder where these knick-knacks are now :) .... that's really one my habits when i go to a place for the first time - buy local souvenirs and some time later could not remember where these are :)
Actually our trip to Banaue was also work-related :) ... i was in the audit department at that time and one of branches that we were auditing was our Cauayan or was it Tuguegarao ??? Anyway, of course we made it a point to look for a customer that we will confirm somewhere near the Cordilleras hahaha - thus reaching Banaue :). We would have went farther to the Sagadas to get a glimpse of the ancient local version of mummies but the weather was not really in the mood to connive with us so we decided to just go back to the branch - talk about bad timing :) ... oh yes, by the way, one thing, don't try to go down the terraces by car on late afternoon .. there is so much fog so we were just inching our way down (as if i was aware !) .. my friend Debbie was sitting in front of the car and talking to the person who drove us .. i was at the back of the car - and you know what i was doing ? ... nope not praying for a safe journey but - sleeping ! ... well i was so tired you know so i was oblivious to the fact that we had zero visibility ... while debbie was chatting to her throat to keep our driver awake, i was sleeping to my heart's content :) ... well you know that's one of my good traits ... put me at the back of a car and five minutes later you can just forget that i exist (hehehe) ... but don't put me in front because if you make wrong turns or a different type of manuevering than my style, you can hear all the oops and "i told you to go that way " :) ... but when i am really sleepy, i sometimes forget that somebody is talking to me - whether i am in front or at the back of the car :) ... hhmm not so courteous huh, oh for crying out loud, at least i leave you in peace :) ... |
