-As a prehistoric hunter, how would you go about providing tools needed for daily survival? This film demonstrates the fundementals of the art of flintknapping. Watch as a series of stone pieces are skillfully produced.

-Not a how-to per se, but its is wonderfully inspiring to watch a master like Bruce Bradley work his magic. HOW TO MAKE ARROWS FROM THE STONE AGE with Brian James
Brian James humbly walks the student through every stage of making an arrow. You'll learn what shrubs make good arrow shafts, where to find feathers and sinews, how to make hide glue, pitch glue, and paint, and how to pull it all together into a fully functional (and beautiful) arrow. The camerawork makes it all easy to see and follow, and Brian James explains how and WHY he is doing everything as he does it. The tools he uses are modern, but at every stage the prehistoric alternatives are explained and demonstrated. The flintknapping demo is brief, but informative and will get you started. It is worth mentioning that alternatives to a stone point are discussed, so even non-knappers will find this video useful. It is an excellent source for those folks who want to take their arrowhead making a step farther. (1 hour 50 min) ($34.95, American Funds, postage is included, COD is OK, no credit cards, please)

THE ART OF FLINT KNAPPING by D. C. Waldorf
This is the supplemental video to DC Waldorfs much acclaimed book, by the same name. Waldorf covers all the basics, from breaking into the raw flint nodules, to hard hammer and billet shaping, to final pressure flaking and notching. There is even a sidelight on gunflint making! He illustrates a variety of holding positions and alternative approaches and lets the viewer decide which will work best for him or her. I watched this video with a group ranging from beginner and intermediate knappers to the merely curious and everyone enjoyed it and learned something. If you are thinking of ordering this video, be sure to have a copy of The Art of Flintknapping handy as it really is designed to supplement the book. The necessary theory and explanations are found in the book NOT in the video, and DC moves really fast, so youll need to do some homework to keep up with him! Order from:

Abo Knapping Techniques

This video is a great source of information for both beginner and advanced knapper alike. The host, Roger Warmuskerken steps the viewer through many aspects of knapping using a more traditional approach of using only bone and antler. In the first portion of the video, Roger steps the viewer through the process of making a beautiful St Charles Dovetail. He clearly demonstrates all aspects of making this point from percussion to edge preperation and pressure flaking. Later in the video, he domonstrates some more advanced techniques such as working slabs and notching with bone. Overall this video is a must for any collection.
