This was my second business trip to Belgium and this time around, I made sure to visit some tourist places in either Belgium or Netherlands. I would have loved to visit Kenkenhof, Netherlands where the first song of Aniyan (Tamil Movie) was shot, but have to settle with visit to Atomium and city center in Brussels due to the time constraints of my business trip.
The Atomium is a monument built for Expo '58, the 1958 Brussels World's fair. It is 335-feet tall, with nine steel spheres connected so that the whole forms the shape of a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. Tubes which connect the spheres along the 12 edges of the cube and all eight vertices to the centre enclose escalators connecting the spheres which contain exhibit halls and other public spaces. The top sphere provides a panoramic view of Brussels. Each sphere is 18 metres in diameter.
The Grand Place is the central market square of Brussels. It is surrounded by guild houses, the city's Town Hall and the Bread House. The square is the most important tourist destination and most memorable landmark in Brussels next to the Atomium and Manneken Pis.
