The Escape
Her eyes
are wide with terror
Her muscles taut with fright
She strains her eyes to see him
And pulls her sweater tight
She sees a hooded figure
Approaching in the dark
His staff is gnarled and crooked
His black robe long and stark
His eyes are dark and hollow
And burn into her soul
She knows she can't turn back now
That she must play her role
She thrusts her hands toward Heaven
And cries out in her fear
He laughs and calls her closer
She slowly edges near
She stands up tall beside him
Still looking weak and thin
She's ready for this battle
But knows she'll never win
She screams and rushes toward him
And swallowing her pride
She throws her feeble body
And knocks him to the side
He lashes out in anger
To seal her mortal fate
She thrusts her arms to block him
But knows that it's too late
His staff comes down upon her
She gouges at his eyes
He jumps back flailing wildly
From pain and from surprise
His massive form collapses
And crumples in a heap
She sees his lifeless body
And she begins to weep
Her battle finally over
Her tears flow free and true
Her enemy is gone now
Her faith has seen her through
She thinks about her family
The life she had before
Her heart and soul are healed now
And she can live once more
Her eyelids flutter open
She weeps with tears of glee
She's won this hopeless battle
And she is finally free
