Local Author Publishes Controversial Novel

Inspired by Teacher-Student Sex Scandals

BOSTON (January 30, 2006) – Inspired by the recent slew of reports of older woman younger male affairs that have seized the attention of the public, local author K.M. Thompson decided to write a story addressing the issue with a different twist. His debut novel, Me and Mrs. Jones, is due for release March 2006.

Me and Mrs. Jones takes the view point of the older woman, Faith Jones. After a near death encounter at the hands of her incarcerated husband, Faith has given up on ever finding love and romance. But it soon happens when she least expects it. Her son’s best friend, young and handsome Darius Tate, forces Faith to lose control every time he visits. Their secret rendezvous may be the best thing to happen in Faith’s bedroom, but it could be the worst decision that either of them has ever made.

In addition to this, Thompson adds a back story illustrating the struggles students go through with MCAS and high school graduation, using eighteen-year-old Darius. Working as a teacher and student counselor in one of the roughest neighborhoods in Boston, Thompson discovered that this was one of the many tribulations that many students face.

Born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, K.M. Thompson has experience in journalism, comic strips, screen and television writing, short stories and forms of poems. Me and Mrs. Jones is his first novel and definitely not his last.

Q & A with Author K.M. Thompson

Q – What compelled you to write Me and Mrs. Jones?

A – Many different things. But what stands out to me was all the attention the media gave to the teacher-student sexual abuse cases. I wanted to get into the head of some of these women. For example, the Letourneau and Lafave cases. I did a lot of research and listened to what the women had to say. The media treated these women like monsters. I wanted to bring a different perspective.

Q – How much of the novel is realistic?

A – Well, first and foremost, the entire story is fiction. The plot itself is based on the older woman-teenage boy controversy in the media. But the characters and the storyline are both made up.

Q – Do you think age difference is important when it comes to dating?

A – It depends. If both parties are mature enough to understand the struggles of a relationship than it could possibly work. See, the fun and romance are a given; they’re what keeps them together. It’s the challenges in relationships that both have to be prepared for.

Q – In your personal opinion do you think the student-teacher relationships are justified?

A – Definitely not. Although many of these teachers may be battling their emotional or psychological pain, they are still in a position of power. It’s almost like a doctor – patient relationship or the extreme cases of the priest sexual abuse. Until both are in a position to make a conscious decision, I don’t believe that the relationships are justified. It’s just not ethical.

Q – How does MCAS fit into all of this?

A – As a school counselor and teacher, it bothered me how many of my students struggled with the MCAS exam and the possibility of not graduating. I wanted to illustrate this in the novel through eighteen-year-old Darius Tate.

Q – What insights or lessons do you hope to share and instill with your readers?

A – That the biggest struggle is learning yourself. By the end of Me & Mrs. Jones, both Faith and Darius finally realized that they had to connect with themselves, individually, before they could connect with anyone else. So before jumping or even settling in a relationship, people should know who they are and what they are looking for.
