USC-NOTRE DAME RIVALRY
Dramatic Finishes
Over the years, USC and Notre Dame have been involved in many games featuring dramatic finishes at the end. Here's a sampling of some of the more famous contests.
1931 - USC 16, ND 14.
USC trailed the Irish 14-0 at the outset of the final stanza, but stormed back behind the running of Gus Shaver and the passing of Orv Mohler. Johnny Baker kicked a game-winning 33-yard field goal with 1:00 remaining. All of USC's points came in the fourth quarter. The win snapped ND's 26-game unbeaten streak and was USC's first-ever win in South Bend.
1948-USC 14, ND 14.

The second-ranked Irish had their 21-game winning streak snapped in Los Angles, but were able to extend their unbeaten streak under Frank Leahy to 27 when Emil Sitko scored from one yard out with 35 seconds left. Steve Oracko's extra point sealed the 14-14 tie.
1964 - USC 20, ND 17.

Rod Sherman caught a 15-yard TD pass from Craig Fertig with 1:33 to play to upset unbeaten and top ranked Notre Dame. USC was down, 17-0, at halftime.
1978 - USC 27, ND 25

With 1:35 to play, Notre Dame's Joe Montana led the Irish to the lead when he threw his second TD pass to with 46 seconds to play. It seemed Montana had pulled out the win, but Trojan QB Paul McDonald had a last shot. Overcoming a fumble that was called an incomplete pass, McDonald coolly marched the Trojans into field goal range. Frank Jordan nailed the 37-yard field goal with six seconds to play to beat their rivals and Montana.
1982 - USC 17, ND 13
Michael Harper, fumbling as he dove over the goal line, scored on a controversial winning 1-yard run with 48 seconds to play. It was coach John Robinson's last game of his first tenure at USC.
1986-ND 38, USC 37

The Irish rallied back from a 20-9 halftime deficit, culminated by John Carney's 19-yard field goal as time expired to give Notre Dame a 38-37 win.
1996 - USC 27, ND 20

In its first overtime win in 3 tries in 1996, Delon Washington scored on a 15-yard run with 1:50 to go in regulation and then barely edged the ball over the goal line on the ensuing 2-point conversion run to tie the game at 20-20. After Rodney Sermons caught a 5-yard TD pass from Brad Otton in the first overtime, Troy stopped the Irish, breaking USC's 13-game non-winning streak to Notre Dame.
