This night was starting out a bit of a disaster. I had been trying to get in touch with Nick Gigler (drummer of Mest) for a while to set up an interview, as I had met him a few times before. That didnt work, so I decided to wing it and find him at the show. I ran really late, only to get there in time for Catch 22 and not much time to find Nick. That was the theme of the night, it was a Nick hunt. I was really happy about this night as a whole, this is Mests first headlining tour, and they deserve the packed house they brought out. Theyre great guys, who just like to have a great time. I dont have anything bad to say here (for once). Catch 22 didnt have my full attention I am afraid to say because I was searching for Nick. They still rocked the house though. Theyre just an amazing live band, they have great energy and their blend of what is almost hardcore ska is infectious. However, the hunt was on for me. The girl at the door was kind enough to let me out to have a look around. The high point of that were the screaming teenyboppers at the door asking if they could leave to get autographs. I forget the bouncer girls name, but she had the best reply I have heard in yearsI dont know honey, I stopped being their manager last week. I love that girlshe is fucking hilarious. I didnt find Nick then by the way. So I decided to look foe Ben Wu. Thats another Webster staple, when in doubt, go find Ben. So I went to look, which was as productive as looking for a needle in a haystack with the size of that crowd. Ben isnt the tallest person in the world either (Sorry Ben). So, I made my way to the front and found him...got permission to stand up near the stage, and watched a great show. I still didnt find Nick though Mest was in full force alright, even though bassist Matt, their main jumper, pulled a tendon in his foot (I think, thats what Nick told when I did find him). All the crowd pleasers were brought out for the night. Now that I am writing this I forget the order (of course) but they played my favorite, Long Days, Long Nights and others like Hotel Room, Cadillac and Fuck the Greyhound Bus. There was also a drinking contest on stage (for those over 21 of course) and a fan selected to play guitar during Cadillac. That was a bit too Green Day-esque for me, but it was all in good fun, and that is what counts. The minute the band was done, I raced over to the other side of the stage to try to get Nicks attention. I was a millisecond too late and the door closed. The bouncer said Mest were not taking any visitors. I know they were the headliners, but they arent the fucking Stones, so yes, I was a bit peeved. After the 10 minutes he insisted people wait to exit had passed, he allowed everyone backstage (AKA the alleyway) but me. He said I could exit that way if I pleased and he would watch me. Thanks buddy. So I went to give up and exit, and on the way out, there was the man of the night, Nick Gigler. He did remember me after all, I went to the diner with him and some friends once, but being as hes such a cool guy, he remembered me. We talked for a bit about Matt Lavatos foot, headlining for the first time and finding a better way to contact each other! We decided that since my interview was a bust, I would contact him later on in the tour to have a chat. Look forward to that for now my dear Star readers!
