Student Check-In As students come in every morning, they are to find the crayon with their name and place it with the "packers" or "buyers". This gives me a quick lunch count as well as the ability to see who is absent that day. During the day as students use the bathroom/drink passes or go to the office or nurse, they place their crayon in the corresponding box. This enables me to quickly see where everyone is at any given time.
Student Job Chart Each week 6 students are given a job that they are responsible for. Our classroom has morning charts that are based upon math principles that 5 of those students must complete as they come in. The students share their charts with the class on the carpet asking questions of their chart and engaging all students in learning. The sixth student is the "Teacher's Helper". They are responsible for taking the attendence and lunch count to the office, as well as any other needs that may come up during the day. This chart enables my students to have a strong sense of responsiblity each day as they walk through the door. It also helps our mornings run smoothly and predictably, which starts the day of with a solid routine.
Traffic Light Discipline Our classroom has adapted a "traffic light" discipline plan. Each students has a clip which is placed at the bottom of our traffic light. Every child starts the day off with a "green" light. During the day, if students are not following classroom rules or making positive choices they are asked to move their clip. This means they must place their clip on the "yellow" light. This is a warning, and students sit off to the side for 15 minutes in a specified desk. They can still participate in class, and still see everything going on. This prevents them from missing out on any education. If there is another infraction, then students place their clips on the "red light". This results in 30 minutes in the specified desk. Finally, if students are asked to move their clips again, this results in a trip to the office. If any student goes beyond an office visit, the parents are contacted and there is a possiblity of morning detention.
