| I had a deep connection with the character of Gollum/Smeagol. Who, in my opinion represents man, which is basically evil, but still can acheive a sense of goodness. I'm very fond of the scene in The Two Towers, where Smeagol and Gollum are debating, because it represents humanity (Smeagol) and our relationship with God (Frodo) and the devil (Gollum) so well. The scene has always sent shivers running up and down my back, because it hits so close to home. Gollums trying to convince Smeagol that he's worthless and nobody is really going to look after him, except Gollum, himself. But, Smeagol triumphs over the lie and chooses to have a better master of his life, because Frodo showed him acceptance, understanding, and most importantly love. Unfortunately the incident with the "Forbidden Pool" arose that Frodo didn't have much control over, but in order to keep Smeagol from getting killed, he had to sacrifice, and let the men capture Smeagol, and question him. Of course Smeagol didn't understand why Frodo did what he did, and felt betrayed.. It was just something he couldn't get over, and ultimately in the end that was Smeagols downfall. |
