In Fact There Was--
In fact there was a reason he hadn't told BJ then and there how damn good he really did look bare-chested, but it wasn't the tongue-in-cheek one he'd tossed out. He didn't know, exactly, when he'd stopped looking at BJ with that twinge of resentment he thought he'd never shake, with that little prickle of confusion at being confronted by this not-Trapper, this usurper who lay sprawled across Trapper's old bed in warm, muzzy sleep and never imagined how the bunk's previous occupant had lain just so, languorous, in those same covers, grinning suggestively at Hawkeye. Didn't know, exactly, when he'd stopped noticing what BJ did wrong when he stitched a patient with a strange movement of fingers or shaved with a smooth twist of the wrist that didn't quite ring true, and started liking what he did... differently. The way his hand curled against his cheek in sleep; stupid things like that. There was something about the way BJ moved, open and uninhibited, that was totally unlike the calculated sinuousness of Trap's motions when they were alone, and it disconcerted him even it fascinated him. BJ seemed completely unaware of his own pure, tanned muscularity under the dimness of the overhead lamps, and Hawkeye didn't dare point it out for fear of shattering that easy assuredness forever.
And when BJ tilted his head in frank concern later and offered to touch him, confident, unashamed, Hawkeye was almost ready to attribute it to that beautiful ignorance again. It surprised him, of course, enough that he looked up in a moment of unguarded earnestness and met BJ's eyes. There was something very self-aware in those eyes, and yet still they were unembarassed. That's what I asked, they said, you heard right. Take it or leave it as it is. Hawkeye, his own face an open book of God knew what, fear and startlement and longing, had to swallow so hard he nearly bit his tongue to keep from gasping at him, Yes, I'll take it, and you along with it. To keep from lunging up and upsetting the still as he did just that. In a while the urge passed, and he choked and laughed, choking on the laugh because deceit with BJ made the bile rise in his throat, hating the laugh, and said that BJ should put his shirt on.
It was the last thing that he wanted.
