The Great M*A*S*H-Slash Challenge, 2003
Introduction
In early July of 2003, I was massively bored. I was in the midst of my college search, working nine-to-five days three times a week, scrambling to do my summer homework, preparing for driving school, and still bored. At about that time, Manon started a slash challenge for the Les Mis�rables fandom, in which participants were randomly assigned a pairing and asked to write it. I'm a chicken, so I didn't volunteer, but later I started thinking that such a challenge would also be particularly appropriate for M*A*S*H, with its small group of main male characters. So, with Manon's go-ahead, I started one for my fandom.
(No, honestly? It's all an involved, thinly veiled scheme to make iolanthe write more. But we like to keep up appearances; hence the introduction above.)
Format
Thirteen characters -- BJ, Flagg, Frank, Hawkeye, Henry, Klinger, Lyle, Mulcahy, Potter, Radar, Sidney, Trapper, and Winchester -- were selected by the participants to serve as the "character pool." These thirteen characters provided us with no less than seventy-five pairing possibilities, once three (Charles/Henry, Potter/Henry, and BJ/Henry) had been eliminated due to the logistical difficulties they posed. Each pairing was assigned a number with a random number generator, and each participant then emailed the moderator with three numbers of her choice. The corresponding pairings were emailed to each participant on July 9th, 2003. Once they received their pairings, the participants could choose among them, or they could take a stab at all three.
Almost three months have been given in which to write these stories, the deadline being October 1st, 2003, but even this deadline is flexible, so that stories can be submitted in any reasonable amount of time.
