Dear Employment Manager, 3
April 2005 I have a Bachelor of Arts in
Communication from Stonehill College in Easton, MA, and a Master of Arts in
Communication from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH. Having always been involved with student
life, I feel that leadership is a seed in everyone, and that it is our
obligation and compulsion to point students in the right direction so they can
recognize their potential. My current
position at Newbury College entails two primary responsibilities: being a
Resident Director and the Campus Activities Coordinator. I chose this job in particular because the
duality allows me to explore both areas in a small, yet diverse, school. As the Campus Activities Coordinator, I had
the unusual role of filling in for the Director of Campus Activities while she
was out on maternity leave, which provided a huge learning curve for me as a
new professional. This included
carrying out Orientation Leader training, and a full First Year Student
Orientation. Although challenging, I
believe I gained so much from the experience, and feel I am ready to move
forward in my professional career in the area of Student Affairs. Below I have briefly touched upon what I
think I can contribute to a larger school, given the opportunity. Although I do not have a degree in
College Student Personnel, I believe my experiences, jobs, and Communication
degrees have provided a well-rounded background that is essential to a position
in Campus Activities. As the Campus
Activities Coordinator, I have planned and successfully carried out the
College’s first overnight snowboarding trips.
The first one was in December to Killington, Vermont, and the second was
in February to Sunday River, Maine.
Both were three days, two nights, and have really helped me gain a
reputation here because of the careful planning involved. I am currently planning a weekend camping
trip. In addition, I have been involved
with Orientation Leader selection and training, have carried out First Year
Student Orientation, Student Clubs/Organizations Fair, Family Day, and have
maintained communication with the Dean of Students, the Director of Facilities,
the Director of Residence Life, and the Director of Campus Activities. I have a well rounded vision of
the student body because of both my positions, and understand the student life
issues that professionals face when involved in Student Affairs. I have found from working in Campus
Activities and Residence Life, that involvement and leadership affects commuters
and residential students if they do not find their niche in student life. Thus, I have always encouraged every student
I meet to get involved in some way—or I have sequestered their help during
events and programs, to make them feel like they are a part of something. A letter and resume can express so
little about my motivations and ambitions; therefore, I included some
references who will be happy to answer any questions you have about me as the
Campus Activities Coordinator, Resident Director, graduate research/teaching
assistant, or my dedication to being a student advocate. Please feel free to contact me with any
questions and I welcome the opportunity to discuss my background further with
you by phone or email: 508 333 4923, [email protected]. Thank you kindly for
your consideration. Sincerely, Kelly Mailly |
