After a vacation trip to Alaska in 2000, our family decided that we wanted to live in this beautiful place. We sold our house at St Libory, Nebraska and parted with 20+ year accumulation of unneeded "stuff", packed the things we couldn't part with and journeyed up the Alaska highway 3800 miles to our new life up north. We spent 2 weeks traveling, camping along the way and seeing sights in Yellowstone, Glacier Nat'l Park and the western Canadian provinces, arriving June 1, 2001. Alaska is a beautiful place with spectacular scenery, friendly people and a somewhat unique lifestyle. We rented a house near Chugiak, AK for the first summer. In August we purchased a home on 5 acres about 7 miles southeast of Eagle River (12 miles north of Anchorage) on a mountainside. Our property borders Chugach State Park (495,000 acres!) so we have a huge backyard! Our neighbors include moose, Dall sheep, black bears, brown bears and eagles. On a clear day we have a gorgeous view of Denali (MT McKinley) and also the Knik Arm of the Cook Inlet (Pacific ocean). We enjoy the seasons. Summers are cool, highs rarely above 85 with about 22 hrs of daylight at summer solstice (it never really gets completely dark in summer). Winters are mild for Alaska with a few days below zero, but short days with only 4 1/2 hrs of daylight at winter solstice. We have been enjoying camping in our small camper, riding the motorcycles, hiking, skiing and attending events and festivals. Spring is here, garden projects are started.
