KALYPSO 2.1: VERSION INFORMATION AND INSTALLATION NOTES

Kalypso: a program for molecular dynamics simulation of atomic collisions in
metallic solids, using composite screened Coulombic and tight-binding
interatomic potentials.

Version: 2.1

Date of this release: December 2005

Author: Marcus Karolewski, University of Brunei Darussalam.

Literature citation for Kalypso: M.A. Karolewski, Nucl. Instr. Meth. B 230 (2005)

Note: The Cone program was written by Mr Tan Hean Seng, formerly a student at
the National University of Singapore. Literature citation for Cone: H.S. Tan,

Updates: Unless serious errors come to light, I doubt if there will be any further
updates before July 2006. Bug reports will be posted on my Webb site (see above).

Terms: Kalypso is freeware. That means you can use, copy and distribute it as
you see fit (no permission required), and you can publish any results that you
obtain. If you want to set up a mirror site for the Kalypso package let me know
and I'll put a link to your site on my Webb page.

System requirements: Kalypso should run on any 32-bit Windows platform
(95/98/2k/Me/NT/XP/et al.) but I have only tested it on 98/2k/XP. The appearance
and behaviour of the user interface may vary slightly between platforms. In
these days of cheap computing, I suggest that you use a computer with 500 MHz
CPU and at least 128 MB RAM. Ideally you should use a fast computer (> 3 GHz)
with plenty of RAM (1 GB) and disk space. However, Kalypso will run on older
systems, although it may be too slow for some applications. The program was
designed to fit a 1024x768 pixel display monitor (or larger). At lower
resolution, some dialog boxes used by Spider may not fit on the screen.

To install: unzip to any folder. Kalypso does not make any changes to the
registry, nor does it install or modify any system files.

To uninstall: delete the directory tree into which you installed Kalypso

Spider cannot be run from a read-only drive (e.g. CD-ROM): it needs a writeable
drive in order to create temporary files (in the \bin\temp directory).

Source code: Sorry, I do not distribute the source code for Kalypso.

Getting started: look at the documentation User Guide in the \docs folder and at
the tutorial in the \tutorial folder. Users risk frustration if they tackle
research-level problems during the learning stage. It is better to approach your
objective slowly, via simpler systems.

Good luck with the package.
