~ Books ~
Having trouble finding something to do this summer? Going on a long vacation to Kanadia? Or just want something good to read? Well here is a list of books I have read in the last few years [and my criticism]. Most of the books were "required reading" unfortunately.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - Twain: This book narrates Huck's lengthy ride down the Mississippi in his efforts to free Jim from
slavery. Or something like that. I don't really remember because I read it three years ago.
All Quiet on the Western Front - Remarque: One of the first great novels about World War I. The author tells his story from a German
soldier's perspective. Some content is lost in the translation, but it is very powerful.
All The King's Men
Bhagavad Gita - anon.: An excerpt from the Mahabharata, the Gita is one of the major philosophical writings in Hinduism. Not really
much of a story book. Nevertheless hours of entertainment.
The Birth of a Republic - ?: A concise history of the American revolution. Unlike most history books this is actually a very exciting
retelling of the revolution.
Candide - Voltaire: No, Candide was nnot just our senior year marching band music, it was also a very good book by this French
philosopher. A must read for all who wish to be sarcastic, witty, or clever.
Catch-22 - Heller: I have always had mmixed feelings about this book. On the one hand it's really funny and has great social criticism. But then again its very long and drawn-out. It is however extremely well-organized. Heller's characters are just very ...GOOD.
