Karla and Mark's House
An Oasis in N Dallas
Here we are - 2 Californians in Texas
The land of red meat, good-ole boys and big hair

After living a year in Stepford - I mean Plano, we purchased a house in McKinney.  For North Dallas, McKinney has a charm about it.  There is a historic downtown with antique shoppes and cozy cafes.

While most people live in Beige-Land and are frightened of color due to "resale value", we chose to create our own HOME out of the house we purchased.  This required (30+ gallons of burgundy, black, multiple shades of grey, purple and hunter) paint, marble tiles, plush carpets and hardwood.

Boo! - says our doormap.  This brick one-story is accented by black door and shutters.  The late Allister kitty greets you.   NOLA style lamp.
              Medieval Foyer
Black + white marble tile on diamond with grey walls/black trim.  Hanging lamp, stone lion and gargoyle cat, Illuminations sconces throughout.  Curio houses Nightmare Before Christmas goodies, wedding albums, Morticia/Gomez Barbies, gargoyles.  Curio is guarded by suit of armor (Garden Ridge), griffins and pewter chalices.

Other view of Foyer
Black door, trim and burgundy walls.  Ceiling is dark grey.
                         Formal Living Room (Parlor)
Still a work in progress.  The proposed theme is a cross between Magic Castle (Hollywood) and Muriel's Jackson Square.  Burgundy velvet couch + chaise (Super Discount in Orange County CA).  Lots of beaded and velvet pillows.  Curtains are burgundy velvet and gold satin (for a King Arthur look).  Wood coffee and end tables.  Beaded gold lamp.  New photo - Vermeer and Woman at Sea oil paintings.  Opera and art deco prints.  (Hard to see) Seance table with gold satin cloth and art deco crystal ball.  Chaise is guarded by "monster monkey" + Miss Josie.
                  Formal Dining Room
One of my favorite rooms - dark wood, deep burgundy walls with gold accents.  China cabinet and dining room chairs with Gothic design.  French art deco prints from the Monmarte.  Wood wine rack (Cabernet, Beaujolais, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Malbec...) + silk flowers from Cost Plus.  New photo-(side view) includes Allister portrait (watching over us), Woman Dining oil painting and Amy Brown sexy print.  The coup de grace -  black Spanish style iron chandelier (thank you Ebay).  China cabinet houses Chartreuse, Absente, Drambuie, Vampire Wine collecion and other lively spirits.
New Orleans Inspired Kitchen - Medium grey walls with dark grey ceiling and black cabinets/trim.  Black shade/beaded chandelier (JCP).  Pirates Pub plaque - Strong Ale + Fine Food. The pine table that won't die - now painted grey with black lace tablecloth + black iron candelabra.  Not able to see - Waverly wallpaper (Haunted looking grey scrolling ivy with almond background).  Side wall - Edward Gorey Gashlycrumb Tinies poster.  New photo - Edward Gorey Playbill, Dracula with Terence Stamp (London, 1970's).
Tim Burton inspired Family Room - Burgundy walls, black trim.  This room is inspired by Tim Burton/vampyre genre and is my kitschy-vampire themed room complete with Nosferatu and Peter Cushing Dracula posters.  Nightmare Before Christmas goodies are seen throughout - Mayor beanie, NBC poster, Meet Sally + Meet Jack prints as well as scary toys Disneyland print.  My indulgences - Z Gallerie custom grey / black swirly couch, chair + ottoman as well as Z Gallerie (Haunted Mansion looking) black beaded lamp.  Full length mirror in back of chair (already there).  The scary shelf houses the year 'round Halloween tree of bats/skeletons and evil black cat (from Wal-Mart no less).  Entertainment center has wedding bouquet, wedding portrait and invite also candles galore and Dia de los Muertos figurine (from Austin).  Fireplace + mantle includes stone cat (thanks Dad), candles, and wedding gifts - the gorgeous fireplace screen by Aunt Barbara, iron candelabra from Casey + Heather, Jack cookie jar from Karen/Ray.  Atop the CD rack (cannot see) is the beanie bat from Tanya.  In back of the couch is the iron floor candelabra from Tijuana (Tanya- remember carrying these things thru customs!!).  The Raven sits on the candelabra.  Burgundy/black scroll panels from Z Gallerie.  There is a floor New Orleans style lamp in the corner - very cool from Lowes..
The Boudoir - Thanks to the discount (quality) furniture store in Garland (for our bedroom and dining room!)  our super-tall cherry poster bed is accompanied by the nightstands and bureau.  The matching vanity (from BigLots!) houses my Hanae Mori and art deco jewelry stand (Design Toscano).  Gold mirrors are essential as well as silk ficus trees.  Walls are deepest purple and carpet is ultra-plush purple.  There are gold satin curtains in back of the bed and the window has  dark purple velvet panels.  Unfortunately, kitties like to attack the pretty bedspread - now we have cheap one until they get older!
Master Bathroom - Walk in closet (a TX thing!), water closet and full double sink and bathtub.  I included 3 of my favorite Amy Brown prints in the bath.  Colors are lavendar, dark purple, gold  and green.  Lots of silk purple flowers and green vines/leaves.  Some wallpaper accents of green scrolling ivy.  Great for aromatherapy baths!
The Water Closet - So small it is difficult to see  Dark purple paint, beautiful prints from Melody of New Orleans and gold candle sconce/mirror set.
Mark's Music Room - Still a major "work in progress".  But, this room is entirely black (walls + ceiling) with dark grey carpet and gold border (thanks Gothic Martha Stewart or the link!)  OK, it is the band room so it is cramped with amps, guitars, drums, etc!!  We just got some curtains that match the border perfectly.
Spare Bathroom - I love this bath.  It is completely retro with Olivia's erotic Bettie Page print, black sheer curtains for tub and the authentic 50's red flocked wallpaper.  Thanks Mom for the majority of the labor !!
Recent additions include a clear beaded chandelier from Illuminations and beaded wall sconce.
The Green Room / Office - While at my previous job, I spent lots of time here!!  This is the "home office".  Now Mark + I have 2 desks with our own computers.  The modern married couple - both at one's computer but in the same room (demented + sad...but social!)  Walls and carpet are hunter green.  Disneyland's Haunted Mansion is on the far wall.  Nightmare clock, the real Josephine and a bunch of Anthropology degrees adorn the walls.  The green futon is now gone  and room is awaiting more $$ for additional work!
Spare Bedroom - "Dark + Dreary Paris" themed.  Inspiration is Cailleboitte's Rainy Paris artwork.  Walls are light grey, trim is black and ceiling is dark grey.  This was the last room to be finished.  Black netting from Newport News is over the bed.  The butterfly wings are from the Ren Faire.  Black boas are the perfect decoration.  Paris prints and oil paintings throughout.
New Orleans Themed Hallway
I love "themes"in decoration.  This hallway off of the music room, spare bed and bathroom is meant to be reminiscent of a French Quarter side street.  Bourbon is at the end of the hall and there is a gaslamp type light fixture.  A hanging plant and sconce are on the walls, along with 5 Don Davey prints of NOLA (Pirates Alley, St Louis Cathedral, 2 patios and Rue Royal).  I just need to get back to NOLA to get 3 more street signs for the other doorways.  The walls are medium grey, ceiling and carpet are dark grey and trim is black.
Who says it doesn't snow in TX!!  January 2003 in our backyard.  Did I say that the yard is a major work in progress?!  The plan is concrete, gravel, extended deck, and fountain.  Now we just need $$ to do it!  Maybe next year.
Some Before Pictures -
Family Room -  See all the paint!!
Living Room - The floor was all ripped up!
Many thanks to Glen, Mom + Dad who helped us!!
