Bread and Puppet photos - Summer, 1999

Located in Glover, VT, Bread and Puppet is a collection of artists who perform political skits using large puppets and elaborate costumes. They used to have a big festival once a year called the Domestic Resurrection Circus and Pageant, but they stopped that after 1998 when someone died at the festival in a drug-related incident. Since then, they have had periodic performances around the state, and on the Glover property on Sundays during the Summer.

When I went to Bread and Puppet in 1999, they were dedicating each weekend's performance to something useless. The day I attended the performaces were dedicated to the chokecherry. The performances are held all day long, in different locations around the property. In mid-afternoon, fresh baked bread is served to the crowd.

Peter Schumann (B&P founder) pauses to look across the horizon before announcing the next performance by sounding the trumpet.
A semi-permanent art display against the sanctions against Iraq. The barrels say "Infant and maternal mortality rates have more than doubled in the last ten years"; "Economic sanctions against Iraq have created extreme shortages of food and medical supplies"; "American officials contend that many of the items Iraq wants to buy are suspect because they could be intended for weapons programs"; Iraqi oil prices have more than doubled in the last six months."
